Valtravieso Bodegas y Viñedos origin is in Ribera del Duero. After looking inward for more than two decades we have decided to go further, discover new places, preserve vineyard plots of century-old vineyards and protect native varieties. In a commitment to explore other Denominations of Origin, we will seek wines with small productions and high added value, respecting the identity of each area and under the Valtravieso seal of quality.

D.O. Arlanza
D.O. Arlanza is located in the central area of the province of Burgos. The wine-growing tradition in the Ribera del Arlanza region dates back to the 7th century.
The vineyards
An important characteristic of this D.O. is the altitude of its vineyards which are located at around 1,000 m above sea level. This altitude significantly conditions the development of the crop and the ripening of the grapes, conferring a unique personality to its wines.
The Valtravieso vineyards also have a privileged location in Covarrubias, on the banks of the Arlanza river and next to the Las Mamblas Mountain range, with an exceptional landscape made up of hundred-year-old goblet-trained vines. This area is complex and very difficult to work. It requires extreme viticulture management as there is no irrigation but there is a lot of frost, a lot of forest and animals eating the fruit.
The soil
The soils are poor, very old and quite deep. They are composed mainly of alluvium with boulders, sand and clay at the bottom. These old vineyards have maintained the original style of the original plantation where different varieties of red and white grapes coexisted, with practically no space between the vines, requiring manual work and not allowing mechanized labour. Despite being somewhat "forgotten" vineyards, thanks to this unique terroir, they produce spectacular fruit.
The vine
Among many others, these vineyards have plantations of different varieties such as mainly Tempranillo, which is at the limit of ripening due to the confluence of altitude and latitude, and Garnacha, some Mencia, Monastrell, Bobal, Hoja de Higuera (Fig Leaf), Garnacha Tintorera, etc. This diversity of varietals brings complexity and balance to the wines.

D.O. Ribera del Duero
Ribera del Duero hosts vineyards located in Castilla y León, within a strip of the Duero river basin, at the confluence of the provinces of Soria, Burgos, Segovia and Valladolid. The weight of history is evident, since they have been making wine for more than 2,500 years, as evidenced by the wine residues found in the Vacceo site of Pintia and the Roman mosaic of Baños de Valdearados.
The vineyards
Our vineyard is located mainly in the “La Revilla” moorland, a vineyard that we use for our most singular wines. In addition, in the town of Piñel de Arriba, at 850m altitude, is the "Santa María" estate where we have another 9 hectares of younger vineyards, around 15 years old, whose land is located on a hillside, with deeper, higher clay content soils and from where our fresher and fruitier assemblage wines come from.
The soil
The “La Revilla” estate lies more than 915 metres above sea level. Its moorland soils are poor, shallow, clayey limestone soils, which has a positive effect on the grape ripening cycles facilitating, among other factors, the accumulation of aromas and retention of acidity in the grapes. The estate currently covers 60 hectares and is divided into plots to separate the more limestone soils, with older bush-trained vines that provide more mineral, fine, elegant wines, from other plots with more clayey veins that give greater body and fruit.
In Valtravieso we manage 170 hectares of vineyards, of which 100 hectares are located in the moor and of which 70 hectares surround our winery and are owned by us. The rest of the hectares are from loyal winegrowers and the monitoring and management of the vineyard is carried out as if it were our own vineyard.
The vine
The Valtravieso vineyard is in its fullness. The average age of the vines is about 25 years, although our oldest vineyard is around 40 years old where the 44% of it belongs to the initial plantation. We mainly cultivate Tinto Fino as a clear commitment to the native variety, having also plantations of other foreign varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec.

D.O. Rueda
The Rueda Designation of Origin was created in 1980, although the origins of wine in the area date back to the Middle Ages. During the Golden Age, the most famous wine in the area was El Dorado, which came to be considered the court wine at the time of the Catholic Monarchs. The Verdejo grape arrives in Spain during the legacy of Alfonso VI and through the Mozarabs who came to repopulate the Duero basin.

Valtravieso makes its VN wine in the Puras region, south of the province of Valladolid and bordering the province of Segovia, one of the most special and highest altitude areas of the D.O. Wheel, about 850 meters. Likewise, it is the area with the highest concentration of old pre-phylloxera vineyards.
The soil
The soils are irregular and with excellent drainage in the highest layers; They are mainly poor, sandy and gravelly soils with a lot of boulders where the oldest vines are found. Some are also limestone and muddy with a mixture of gravel and boulders. In the lower layers they are strong and muddy, allowing them to store water in order to regulate themselves in the summer months. The youngest vines grow in the most clayey and limestone soils.
The vine
The vine from which this 100% Verdejo wine is born comes from plots with hundred-year-old free-standing vines and plots with vines on trellises that are around 20 years old.

D.O. Ribera del Júcar
D.O. Ribera del Júcar was born in 2003 as an initiative of a group of winemaking cooperatives and private wineries in the province of Cuenca.
The vineyards
A region deeply rooted in the cultivation of vines and cereals and influenced by the Júcar river that flows through its lands. At 750 meters average altitude, the climate is continental Mediterranean with high temperature contrasts between summer and winter and a low rainfall with a Mediterranean/dry humidity regime.
The soil
This area is characterised by its horizontality, being made up of a plain on which there are a number of hills, broken by the river that gives its name to the area and by some wooded hills between Sisante and Casas de Haro. A spectacular blanket of boulders and pebbles cover the deep, clayey-calcareous soils where the vineyards rest. In this environment there are several factors as the river, the climate, the soil and the patient and constant work of its people that have made it possible to obtain unique fruits and high-quality wines.
The vine
Valtravieso's interest in this area stems from the idea of rescuing and revaluing old Bobal vineyards of great quality which, due to low productivity, were being abandoned. Bobal is a very austere grape variety, resistant to inclement weather and pests, and in the old vineyards from which this project arises, with very low production.

D.O. Jumilla
D.O. Jumilla is one of the oldest D.O.'s and a benchmark for wine in the southeast of Spain. Its winemaking tradition is important; the oldest remains of Vitis vinifera in Europe have been found (3,000 B.C.).
The vineyards
The phylloxera plague hit large areas of Europe in the mid-nineteenth century and few plots were spared, including some in the municipal area of Fuente Álamo where Valtravieso has identified and worked two old plots with ungrafted Vitis vinifera rootstock, very bucolic and special due to the layout and location of their old vines, one of which is hidden in a forest and at an altitude of 980m above sea level.
The soil
Its main characteristics are its limestone soils, its continental climate with Mediterranean influence together with low rainfall and its vineyards located at altitudes of between 400-1000 m.
The vine
These ungrafted plots have a traditional goblet cultivation of very old Monastrell, a native variety that sits on a chalky soil. At Valtravieso we work with the Monastrell variety from a fresher approach, more vertical and not so heavy, looking for the house style, fine, elegant and vertical wines.
